All the imagery of Dutch landscapes comes together in this large faience dish: windmills by the water, a sail passing in the distance, a few houses, and small silhouettes sketched in a deep blue on the ivory faience. The central decoration, almost drawn with a pen, is surrounded by a beautiful frieze of scrolling foliage and stylized motifs. But it's also the shape of the dish that commands attention: a generously undulating border, worked in relief with an intertwined pattern, which gives the piece significant presence. On the reverse side, the mark C&S Rotterdam appears. Measuring approximately 34 x 24 cm, it is a beautiful presentation platter, large enough to stand alone on a piece of furniture, in an antique display cabinet, or among a collection of blue and white faience. Time has left some traces on the piece, notably a network of fine crazing in the glaze and a chip with loss on the rim. The latter is clearly photographed so that the condition of the dish can be accurately assessed. A charming Dutch faience piece, whose decoration and elaborate border retain a beautiful presence despite this old flaw.
