This imposing two-handled stein belongs to the tradition of Westerwald stoneware, a German region whose ceramic production is particularly recognized by the characteristic combination of grey stoneware and cobalt blue decoration. The piece bears the handwritten inscription "Handarbeit Girmscheid" on its base, indicating handcrafted production by the Girmscheid manufactory. Founded in Höhr at the end of the 19th century, the Matthias Girmscheid manufactory is part of the long history of Westerwald workshops, particularly renowned for their steins and decorated stoneware.
With a striking presence, standing 20 cm high and with an opening of approximately 9.5 cm in diameter, this stein is especially distinguished by its unusual shape with two large symmetrical handles. Their slender design complements a generous cylindrical body, accentuated at the base and rim with deep cobalt blue. The hand-painted decoration revisits the traditional Westerwald repertoire with a large stylized flower surrounded by freely drawn foliage and volutes. The intense blue contrasts with the light grey hue of the stoneware and retains the nuances inherent to artisanal craftsmanship and firing.
On the main face, the inscription "Damen-Maß" appears, also painted in blue. This inscription, which can be translated as "ladies' measure," places the stein within a Germanic tradition often tinged with humor and gives it a rather delightful personality. The two handles then take on their full meaning in this deliberately singular piece, distanced from the classic cylindrical stein with a single handle. This Girmscheid production dates from the second half of the 20th century and fully preserves the traditional aesthetic of Westerwald stoneware, perpetuated by the region's workshops long after the war.
The stein is in good overall condition. The small surface irregularities, material variations, and nuances in the decoration visible in the photographs attest to its handmade production and contribute to the piece's character.
