Large decorative doorstop in patinated cast brass, depicting a fantastical dolphin whose long tail is coiled around Neptune's trident.
The design is in keeping with the neoclassical maritime style: a stylized dolphin with outstretched fins, a vertical trident, and a molded rectangular base. Its particularly slender silhouette, reaching a height of 43 cm, gives it a truly sculptural presence that transcends its initial function as a doorstop.
This type of design is documented on European doorstops, particularly English ones, produced in various styles between the late 19th and 20th centuries. In the absence of a maker's mark to precisely identify the manufacturer or production period, we have deliberately chosen a cautious 20th-century dating.
The piece displays a natural antique patina, with casting irregularities, small marks, and surface variations that contribute to its character.
