Some ceramics are simply placed on a table, while others immediately imbue a room with soul. This large ceramic dish from Monaco, crafted in the 1950s, perfectly embodies this particularly creative period when workshops on the French Riviera introduced a free, radiant, and extraordinarily expressive decor into interiors. On a deep black, almost lacquered enamel, a true garden unfolds: large pink, mauve, and orange flowers, aqua green foliage, yellow buds, and long winding stems compose a profuse decor that seems to run across the entire surface. Gold then delineates the light, highlighting the leaves, tracing the contours of the flowers, and running along the polylobed edge of the dish. Depending on the lighting, these delicate golden accents appear then fade into the black of the enamel, giving the decor remarkable depth. The form itself is superb: a wide basin of approximately 31 cm, slightly hollow and accented by a dynamic, almost undulating border. With its approximately 7 cm in height, the piece possesses a true sculptural presence. On the reverse, the incised number 131 and a handwritten mark attest to its manufacture. In the post-war years, Monaco and the French Riviera became one of the privileged territories for the renewal of French ceramics: bold colors, brilliant enamels, painted decors, gold accents, and free forms expressed this new Mediterranean elegance, bolder and more joyful. The dish can naturally be used as a large decorative platter, but it especially deserves to be displayed: on a console, in the center of a large table, in a bookcase, or displayed vertically as a piece of wall art. The contrast of black and colors allows it to complement both an antique interior and a very contemporary decor. A few signs of age and slight wear to the gilding, consistent with its age and history, do not detract from its remarkable decorative presence.
