Some pieces need nothing to catch the eye. This large cut crystal sweetmeat dish belongs to that category. With its approximately 24 cm height, its slender footed silhouette, and its imposing domed lid, it possesses that presence once reserved for beautiful pieces meant to be seen as much as used. The crystal has been generously worked. Long, deep cuts create stylized foliage, sheaves, and stars that unfurl around the bowl. They extend onto the lid in an almost dazzling play of facets. As soon as light hits it, the edges illuminate sequentially, and the design acquires remarkable depth. At the top, the silver-plated finial provides the perfect contrast. Its patina tells of the years, while the crystal remains radiant. It is precisely this interplay between the crystal's transparency and the metal's mellowed gleam that gives the piece its character.
