This large ceramic wall plate features a character with a very expressive face, rendered in a satirical style. The modeling is powerful and deliberately accentuated, lending the scene an almost theatrical character. The surface is richly textured. The dark and deep glazes – browns, blacks, blues, and whites – are punctuated by numerous raised details that create a vibrant texture and give the entire piece a strong presence. Every detail of the face and decoration seems to have been modeled directly in the clay, reinforcing the unique character of the piece. The reverse side features a hanging system, allowing for wall display. This plate was clearly designed as a decorative object in its own right, capable of bringing character to an interior. With its textural quality and highly expressive figurative decor, this piece evokes the studio ceramics produced in the second half of the 20th century, when many artists explored free forms and satirical themes.
