Wonderful lamp from the German brand Peill & Putzler. Made with folded glass paste, in shades of green and orange, millefiori style on the outside and white on the inside. Strictly speaking, millefiori is a glassmaking technique that produces distinctive decorative patterns on glassware. The term is a combination of the Italian words "mille" (thousand) and "fiori" (flowers). It is traditionally associated with Venetian glasswork, from Murano. The technique involves the production of glass rods (murrine) with multicolored patterns that can be seen from the ends, where the florets are located. These rods are heated in a kiln and thinned, before being finally cut into thin discs or beads, which are inserted into the objects to be decorated. Over time, it has become recognized as a style in its own right, as objects of this type can be traced back to Roman times. Therefore, in this lamp, the brand revitalizes and modernizes this ancient technique to achieve a completely modern result, tending toward the abstraction of floral forms. This is completely in tune with the brand, as, during the 1970s, the brand expressed the era's fascination with futuristic and sculptural globular forms using materials such as highly polished metals and glass. More about the brand... As its name suggests, Peill & Putzler was the merger of two prominent German glassmakers. After World War II, these two successful German manufacturers merged to become a single company. This is how Peill + Putzler merged and unified their respective experiences and skills in glassblowing and lighting. In 1947, the companies merged and began illuminating Germany's post-war reconstruction. Peill und Sohn (Peill and Son) was founded in 1903 in Düren, Germany. The Putzer brothers from Penzig (Pieńsk) had extensive experience producing oil lanterns for street lighting. Peill & Putzler Glashüttenwerke was rebuilt as a glass and lighting company, the first glass being melted in 1948. By 1950, the company owned five glass furnaces, adding two more in the 1970s and eventually employing 1,500 people. From 1952, the importance placed on innovative design and intricate workmanship meant that Peill & Putzler became one of the founding members of the German Design Council. It quickly became admired in architectural circles, due primarily to its high level of production and attention to detail. By developing numerous new techniques that allowed glass lighting fixtures to be inflated, Aloys F. Gangkofner was instrumental in bringing these methods to industrial production. The art of lightmaking had always been hampered by an inability to break free from reliable, if somewhat rigid, forms of manufacturing, but as a consequence of Gangkofner's innovative and experimental approach with good design at its core, lighting could suddenly become an art form in its own right. In 1994, Peill & Putzler relocated its glass factories to Slovenia, Poland, and Chechnya. Although a small number of lamps were still produced at the original site in Düren, the company was declared insolvent in 2004, although the factory closed in 1997, resulting in limited stocks and increased demand. The legacy left by Peill + Putzler, however, is evident in the world of interior design and style today. By entrusting its designers with the freedom to practice truly exquisite design and craftsmanship, and by developing manufacturing techniques to realize those designs, Peill & Putzler transformed the lamps from something overwhelmingly practical to an art form. The lamps don't even have to be lit to be admired. Shipping of the product will be paid by the buyer based on the dimensions, weight, and destination.
