Product description
Barovier & Toso, Blown Glass, 1960s – Italy Spectacular large Murano glass chandelier designed by Barovier & Toso. Made in the middle of the last century, it features a complex structure, configured around a central metal stem covered in blown glass, a characteristic of Murano's artisanal tradition. Its design is organized into several levels, three in this case. The two levels closest to the ceiling are decorative, featuring large, dangling crystals oriented both upwards and downwards. These large crystals are reminiscent of the whip-like lines of Art Nouveau, thanks to the curves at their ends and their fluted finish. From the lowest level, closest to the floor, emerge the ten arms or lights. These curved arms hold the light sources, which rest on glass lampshades with a fluted finish. The use of clear glass and the staggered composition create a great visual impact; in addition, the silver-plated metal details contrast with the lightness of the glass. This is a unique design by the Barovier & Toso firm, which combines Murano glass tradition with a highly decorative, functional structure. Murano Glass and Barovier & Toso Venetian glass is the result of a fascinating combination of artisanal tradition and sophisticated industrial techniques, uniting manual skill with technological innovation. This fusion, which has endured over the centuries, is at the heart of the rich tradition of Italian glass. The famous Murano glass was born from a prohibition: although glass had been produced in Venice for centuries, in 1291, during the Venetian Republic, its production in the city was banned to avoid fires caused by the high temperatures in the furnaces and to keep the art of glassmaking a secret. All glassmakers were forced to move to Murano, with production being carried out exclusively there. The historic Barovier & Toso company, one of the oldest in the world, was founded in 1295. The Venetian glassmaking house Barovier & Toso is renowned for designing lighting for residences and palaces around the world, admired for its dazzling style and exquisite craftsmanship. This excellence is rooted in an unparalleled heritage: the first documented Barovier as a glass master in Murano dates back to a time when glassblowing was considered an “emerging art.” Since then, various members of the Barovier family have led the Murano glassmaking guild, intertwining their family’s history with that of the craft. The most prominent member of the Barovier family is Angelo Barovier, a true Renaissance man, who in the 15th century invented crystalline glass, a glass of exceptional purity. His works are considered some of the greatest glass masterpieces ever created. Today, more than 20 generations later, the company continues to pass on this vast knowledge and artistic taste in each of its creations. Today, Barovier & Toso remains a prestigious firm, keeping alive family traditions and the knowledge accumulated over centuries. The legacy of the old masters remains a key reference. The company has a museum in Venice's Palazzo Contarini, opened in 1995, which displays the work of Ercole Barovier and other glass masters. Located near the company's headquarters in Murano, the renovated Palazzo Barovier & Toso is much more than a museum: it is a quintessential Venetian experience, where you can appreciate the stunning chandeliers and glass works that have made Murano world-famous. They also have showrooms in Singapore and Milan, the latter with a concept floor, and a boutique in Venice.
