NAPAKO Napako was founded in 1919 in Prague with the aim of helping private companies with metalworking solutions for construction projects. The Czech manufacturer later shifted its focus to the production of household appliances and lighting, a shift that led to collaborations with esteemed designers such as electrician and furniture maker Josef Hurka and Miroslav Prokop between the 1930s and 1970s. Napako's chrome desk lamps and floor lamps were often influenced by the Bauhaus, a progressive German design school that championed the fusion of art, craft, and technology. Many of the brand's striking lighting fixtures incorporated milk glass and opaline glass, and later featured bold shapes and lacquered metal housings in the vibrant colors of Pop Art. Today, vintage Napako table lamps, floor lamps, and chandeliers are rare and highly collectible works of A-Space and mid-century modernist genius. Hurka and Helena Frantová were the superstars of Napako's design roster. Initially an appliance designer, Hurka changed direction to focus on lighting design after Napako discontinued appliance production. For much of the 20th century, Eastern Bloc industrial and furniture designers created their work in near-anonymity—even in the former Czechoslovakia, where communist ideologies clashed with capitalist ideas like branding and acclaim. Although for a brief, shining moment in 1958, the country's designers achieved worldwide fame when Czechoslovakia won the award for best national pavilion at the Brussels World's Fair, their artistry was soon hidden behind the Iron Curtain again. Hurka's table lamps for Napako were featured as part of the award-winning Czech Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, the first after World War II. Frantová often created torch-shaped table lamps with slender bodies in chromed steel or brass for brands such as Okolo and Napako. JOSEF HURKA Czech designer Josef Hůrka designed lighting, including desk and table lamps, as well as floor and ceiling lights, for manufacturers Drupol, Napako, and Lidokov. His career spanned nearly four decades, but one of his earliest collaborations, with lighting manufacturer Napako (NÁstrojaři-PAsíři-KOvotlačitelé), proved the most fruitful. His lamps come in vibrant colors and take on geometric, angular shapes. Designs for Napako include a Bauhaus-inspired UFO-shaped ceiling light (1930s); the Model 1618 table lamp (1954), which features a height-adjustable cylindrical shade on a tripod base; the Model 1633 table lamp (1950s); the Model 0513 table lamp (1950s), which has a conical tin-lacquered shade; and for Drupol the table lamp model 21616 (1963).
