Lalique Bacchantes unsigned vintage clear crystal vase mid 20th century
A true jewel of Franco-Swiss glass craftsmanship, Lalique has become one of the greatest names in glassmaking in France and around the world in the 136 years of its existence.
Founded in 1888 by René Lalique (1860-1945), Lalique was first and foremost a jewelry house, its creator being an exceptional jeweler. After training in the Cartier haute joaillerie workshops, he made a name for himself with his luxury jewelry, particularly during the Art Nouveau period (1890-1910), with his inimitable style of organic and varied compositions in materials, colors and imagination, of which glass and crystal are the centerpieces.
It was truly in 1907 that René Lalique put glass & crystal at the center of both his artistic and decorative creations. He turned what was then considered a less than "noble" material into works of art and collectors' items, still highly prized today.
The "Bacchantes" model you see here is one of René Lalique's 1927 creations. Its name is a reference to the ancient Roman priestesses of the Roman God of wine & drunkenness, Bacchus. They were renowned for their frivolity, nudity and passion for parties and music. The outline of the vase is a faithful representation of their reputation: a neoclassical-inspired frieze in bas-relief, of these nude, happy, dancing women forming a chain!
Although unsigned, this vase is attributed to Lalique, its dimensions, the quality of the crystal mold and the sound to the touch being entirely consistent with a model that would be.
The reason it is unsigned may be that some post-1945 pieces may have left the factory unsigned, for reasons of quality control or special production runs. It may also be a "parting gift" to loyal employees of the Lalique factories who are retiring, making it an exceptional vase compared to the others given these parameters.
If you're passionate about Lalique and luxury crystalware, don't wait any longer. Adopt this vase, a great Lalique classic, without further delay.
