Product description
Kyra Spieker “Ohne Titel” – Sculptural Studio Ceramic Object, Germany, September 1993 A rare sculptural ceramic object by German ceramic artist Kyra Spieker, created in September 1993 as part of an important early body of abstract sculptural works. Personally identified by the artist herself as “Ohne Titel” (“Untitled”), the piece belongs to a group of related sculptures developed during the early 1990s. According to Spieker, these works were executed using self-colored stoneware bodies, emphasizing material presence and sculptural form over decorative treatment. The object exists delicately between vessel, architectural model, and abstract spatial study. Its form consists of two curved planes suspended in tension: an elegant crescent arch hovering above a concave lower body, creating an interior void that becomes as important as the ceramic mass itself. Depending on the angle, the sculpture evokes an eye, a bridge, a boat, or a fragment of Constructivist architecture. The work reflects the quiet rigor of late 20th-century German studio ceramics while simultaneously engaging with ideas of spatial abstraction rooted in modernist sculpture. Particularly significant is Spieker’s own statement that these works were strongly inspired by the Polish avant-garde sculptor Katarzyna Kobro, whose work she encountered in an exhibition at the Museum Wiesbaden. Kobro’s radical understanding of sculpture as spatial construction rather than closed mass resonates strongly here, where emptiness, shadow, and balance become compositional elements equal to the clay itself. Executed in pale grey stoneware with a subtly porous mineral surface, the sculpture possesses an almost concrete-like materiality, recalling Brutalist architecture as much as ceramic tradition. There is no glaze theatrics, no ornamental excess — only proportion, gravity, tension, and light. The piece is signed with the artist’s initials and dated “IX 93” (September 1993). Condition: Good vintage condition with two small edge chips/minimal losses visible in the photographs. These remain relatively discreet and do not significantly diminish the sculptural presence of the work. Dimensions: Height: approx. 10 cm Width: approx. 21.5 cm About the Artist Kyra Spieker (born 1957 in Marburg/Lahn) studied ceramic design at the Fachschule für Keramikgestaltung in Höhr-Grenzhausen between 1980 and 1983 before establishing her own studio in 1984. Alongside her independent artistic practice, she later taught at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and became a member of the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva. Her work moves between ceramic object, sculpture, and architectural spatial investigation, often exploring reduction, balance, and the relationship between mass and void. Influenced by Constructivism and modernist sculpture, Spieker belongs to an important generation of German ceramic artists who expanded ceramics beyond functionality into autonomous sculptural practice. An exceptional collector’s piece for admirers of German studio pottery, Constructivist-inspired sculpture, postmodern abstraction, and minimalist interior aesthetics.
