Kotilo model vase in Murano glass designed by Timo Sarpaneva for Venini in 1994, diameter 20 cm, diameter 17 cm, height 14.5 cm. Timo Sarpaneva ( ) was a highly influential Finnish designer, sculptor, and professor, renowned for his innovative work that blurred the lines between applied and fine arts. He is particularly celebrated for his contribution to glass design but also worked extensively with metal, wood, textiles, and porcelain. Sarpaneva is best known for his artistic and industrial glass creations for the Finnish company Iittala. He experimented widely with glass, developing new techniques and forms that were both aesthetically appealing and functional. His early works from the 1950s, including series such as "Lancet" (1952), "Orchid" (1954), and "Kayak" (1954), earned him international acclaim, including Grand Prix awards at the Milan Triennials. He developed the "i-line" series (1956) for Iittala, characterized by vibrant glass colors and a modern aesthetic. He also designed the iconic Iittala logo with the lowercase 'i'. His "Finlandia" series (1964) of textured glass vases, created using rough wooden molds, achieved further international success. His "Festivo" candleholders (from 1964 onwards), with their distinctive ringed stems, are iconic examples of Scandinavian design.
