Inspired by the tubular steel frame of his bicycle, Breuer created the first armchair from bent tubular steel — a revolution that fundamentally changed furniture production. The construction was only possible thanks to a new process by Mannesmann-Werke, which produced seamless steel tubes that could be bent without breaking. The name Wassily comes from the painter Wassily Kandinsky, Breuer's Bauhaus colleague, who admired the design and received a copy for his quarters.
