Gubbels, born in Rotterdam (1934), has lived in Arnhem since 1952 and works alternately in his studio in the woods near Arnhem or in his studio in the French Ardèche. From 1949 to 1951, Gubbels trained in advertising painting at the Technical School in Rotterdam, and from 1951 to 1952, he took an evening course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. From 1952 to 1958, he studied at the ‘Kunstoefening’ academy in Arnhem, where he also took evening classes in sculpture. His still lifes are well known to everyone. His work frequently features jugs, kettles, chairs, tables, bottles, and chessboards. The angular forms of the chosen subject matter and the specific, sometimes unruly, use of color are clearly recognizable elements that recur constantly. Over time, his artworks became increasingly abstract. He uses a multitude of techniques and materials for these subjects, such as photography, lithography, woodcut, etching, screen printing, mural painting, collage, found objects, cardboard, glass, and metal. Gubbels uses his subjects as a means; he is not concerned with the table or the coffee pot itself, but with the poetry, humor, aggression, or dullness behind them. In doing so, he is not so much guided by prevailing aesthetic views. Gubbels considers striving for beauty in his work to be ‘inauthentic’, as this distracts the viewer from the truth. Thus, true still lifes are created that depict his personal conception of the truth.
