After completing his studies and working as a silversmith in Dresden, he attended the "Großherzoglich-Sächsische Kunstgewerbeschule" in Weimar, now commonly known as the Saxon College of Arts and Crafts where he met the Belgian architects Henry van de Velde and Victor Horta. Later considered one of the most important founders of Art Nouveau, he moved to Frankfurt in 1926, where he became director of the art academy's metal workshop and also a "master of forms." It was there that Christian began designing lamps rather than forging silver. His breakthrough came when he began designing lamps for the Gebr. Kaiser & Co. lamp factory in Neheim Hüsten. In 1936, the 6631 Luxus table lamp debuted and quickly became the undisputed flagship model of the Kaiser Idell series. The term "idell" refers to the word "Idea" and his surname "Dell." The Kaiser Idell brand and lamp production are now owned by the Danish design company Fritz Hansen. In 1948, after World War II, Christian Dell opened a jewelry store in Wiesbaden, where he primarily manufactured silverware until 1955. He died in Wiesbaden in 1974.
