Description
Jorge Pensi, born in Buenos Aires in 1946, initially studied architecture in his hometown before moving to Barcelona in 1975. There, together with designer Alberto Liévore and art theorists Norberto Chaves and Oriol Pibernat, he founded the avant-garde collective "Berenguer"—named after the square of the same name in Barcelona. In 1984, Pensi opened his own studio in Barcelona, where he has since worked on developing innovative aluminum furniture. In 1988, Jorge Pensi presented the Toledo aluminum chair. The design caused a sensation in the design world and made the designer internationally renowned. The Toledo chair was originally intended for Spanish street cafés, but its lightness and stackability quickly made it attractive for conference rooms as well. The distinctive slits in the seat and backrest are a defining stylistic feature. Pensi drew inspiration for this design from the armor of Japanese samurai warriors.
