This is the rare Johnson Wax Desk, Model 617, designed in 1936 by Frank Lloyd Wright for the administrative offices of the Johnson Wax Headquarters in Racine (Wisconsin, USA). This piece was manufactured by Cassina, Italy, who received exclusive rights from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in 1985 to produce the original furniture designs. In 1992, a maximum of 500 tables were produced in black; this model is one of the rare variants. The desk captivates with its sculptural appearance: The generous elliptical tabletop is complemented by a raised second level, which serves as a storage surface for documents or as a decorative structure. The construction consists of black lacquered wood and metal, combined with brass details. Characteristic are the lateral curves and the functional elements – on the right, a semicircular container with two drawers, on the left, a removable wastebasket elegantly suspended in the metal structure. The delicate struts emphasize the architectural character of the design, which follows Wright's clear lines and organic formal language. Particularly noteworthy is the signature on the underside with the Cassina label, Wright's signature, and the number 319, which proves the authenticity of this piece of furniture. This desk is one of the most exclusive design classics in the Cassina program. Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the most influential architects and designers of the 20th century, whose furniture designs are closely linked to his architecture. The Johnson Wax Desk was developed as part of a comprehensive concept for one of his most iconic buildings and is considered a manifestation of his organic design philosophy. Cassina's re-editions are no longer available today, which increases demand in the collector's market. Pieces with a documented serial number, like this example No. 319, are particularly sought after, as they demonstrate the connection between Wright's vision and Cassina's high-quality craftsmanship. The collector's value is correspondingly high, both for Wright enthusiasts and connoisseurs of important 20th-century design classics. Dimensions: L214 x W96 x H99 cm
The desk is in good vintage condition with a few minor signs of wear, such as small scratches and minimal paint irregularities on the metal parts. All parts, including the top attachment and wastebasket, are fully present. The patina gives the piece authenticity but does not affect its function or aesthetic appeal.
