Impressive, expressive painting by the Dutch artist Johannes Hubertus Hendrikus Bévort (1917–1996).
The work depicts an abstract expressionist market scene or cityscape, executed in rich, impasto oil paint using a palette knife—a technique for which Bévort is renowned.
The composition is powerfully constructed with dynamic brushstrokes and knife strokes in blue, white, and earth tones. The paint is applied thickly and vibrantly, giving the surface an almost sculptural appearance.
With his characteristic style, Bévort captured the atmosphere of urban bustle and movement, while the scene partially fades into abstraction.
The work was purchased in 1971 (original purchase receipt available) and is in excellent condition with its original frame.
