Curated Sculptural Vase Duo
Design: Johan van Loon for Rosenthal Studio-Linie, Germany
White Satin Porcelain · 1982–1983
Offered here is a refined duo of sculptural porcelain vases designed by Johan van Loon for Rosenthal Studio-Linie in the early 1980s. Conceived as autonomous objects yet clearly related in proportion and rhythm, the two vases form a composed sculptural pairing that explores verticality, balance, and material restraint.
Design & Form
These works exemplify van Loon’s mature approach to porcelain as an architectural medium. The silhouettes are elongated and softly tapering, with subtly asymmetric openings that prevent strict repetition and introduce a quiet sense of movement. Rooted in modernist abstraction, the forms remain expressive without excess—calibrated, poised, and intellectually rigorous.
Executed in satin-finished white porcelain, the surfaces absorb light rather than reflect it, allowing volume and contour to take precedence. The understated finish emphasizes tactility and form, reinforcing van Loon’s interest in reduction and structural clarity.
The Pairing
Taller vase (Model 3711/24)
Slender and vertically assertive, with a calm architectural authority and pronounced upward pull.
Smaller vase (Model 3711/18)
More compact and grounded, offering proportional counterbalance and rhythmic support within the ensemble.
Together, the two pieces create a coherent sculptural dialogue—distinct in scale, unified in language and material presence.

About the Designer
Johan van Loon (1934–2020) was a pioneering Dutch ceramist and textile artist who played a central role in expanding ceramics from functional design into an expressive sculptural discipline. Trained at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Konstfack in Stockholm—where he worked with Stig Lindberg—and later in London with Lucie Rie, van Loon developed a language of form defined by restraint, tactility, and architectural clarity. His work is represented in museum and institutional collections throughout Europe.
Why This Duo Matters
This pairing represents van Loon’s early-1980s Studio-Linie work at its most distilled: reduced form, disciplined proportion, and a confident reliance on material and silhouette alone. More than decorative objects, these vases form a quiet sculptural conversation—modern, thoughtful, and enduring. An excellent addition for collectors of postwar European ceramics, Rosenthal Studio-Linie, or architecturally driven porcelain design.
