Curated Sculptural Vase Duo
Design: Johan van Loon for Rosenthal Studio-Linie, Germany
Glossy Blue & White Porcelain · 1987
Offered here is a refined duo of sculptural porcelain vases designed by Johan van Loon for Rosenthal Studio-Linie. Created in 1987, these two works function as autonomous art objects while forming a carefully balanced pairing that explores proportion, rhythm, and surface contrast.
Design & Form
These vases exemplify van Loon’s architectural approach to porcelain and his sensitivity to volume and restraint. The silhouettes are reduced, vertical, and quietly expressive—rooted in modernist abstraction yet softened by subtle curvature.
Unlike earlier bisque or matte works, this duo is executed in glossy porcelain, combining deep cobalt blue and crisp white surfaces. The glaze enhances the clarity of the forms, allowing light to articulate edges, planes, and transitions with precision. The result is a dialogue not only of scale, but also of colour and reflection.
The pairing consists of two complementary forms:
• Taller vase (Model 3715/22)
Slender and upright, with a narrow footprint and measured vertical emphasis. Its proportions give it a calm, architectural presence.
• Smaller vase (Model 3715/16)
More compact and grounded, offering visual counterweight through reduced height and softer mass.
Together, the two pieces create a balanced sculptural ensemble—distinct in scale, unified in language.

About the Designer – Johan Gerard van Loon (1934–2020)
Johan van Loon was a pioneering Dutch ceramist and textile artist who played a central role in expanding ceramics from functional design into an expressive sculptural medium. Trained at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Konstfack in Stockholm—where he worked with Stig Lindberg—and later in London with Lucie Rie, van Loon developed a distinctive language of form defined by restraint, tactility, and architectural clarity.
He collaborated with leading manufacturers such as Rosenthal and Royal Copenhagen, founded his own studio in Hengelo, and was instrumental in establishing the ceramics department at ArtEZ in Enschede. His works are held in museum and institutional collections throughout Europe.
Why This Duo Matters
This pairing represents van Loon’s mature Studio-Linie work of the late 1980s:
reduced form, precise proportion, and controlled use of colour and glaze.
It is not merely decorative, but a sculptural conversation between two vessels—quiet, modern, and intellectually rigorous. A strong addition for collectors of postwar European ceramics, Rosenthal Studio-Linie, or architecturally driven porcelain design.
