Offered here is a refined duo of sculptural porcelain vases designed by Johan van Loon for Rosenthal Studio-Linie and produced in 1986. Conceived as autonomous objects yet clearly related in proportion and rhythm, the two vases form a composed sculptural pairing that explores verticality, chromatic transition, and architectural restraint.
Design & Form
These works exemplify van Loon’s mature approach to porcelain as a sculptural medium. The silhouettes are elongated and softly tapering, with subtly asymmetric openings that prevent strict repetition and introduce a quiet sense of movement. Rooted in modernist abstraction, the forms remain expressive without excess—calibrated, poised, and intellectually rigorous.
Executed in glossy porcelain, the surfaces transition from deep cobalt and turquoise blues into crisp white at the rim. About the Designer – Johan Gerard van Loon (1934–2020)
Johan van Loon was a pioneering Dutch ceramist and textile artist who played a central role in expanding ceramics from functional design into an expressive sculptural discipline. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Konstfack in Stockholm—where he worked with Stig Lindberg—and later trained in London with Lucie Rie.
Van Loon collaborated with leading manufacturers such as Rosenthal and Royal Copenhagen, founded his own studio in Hengelo, and was instrumental in establishing the ceramics department at ArtEZ in Enschede. His work is represented in museum and institutional collections throughout Europe.
