Offered here is a refined duo of sculptural porcelain vases designed by Johan van Loon for Rosenthal Studio-Linie. Produced in the early 1980s, these two works function as autonomous sculptural objects while forming a carefully balanced pairing that explores proportion, vertical rhythm, and chromatic contrast.
Design & Form
These vases exemplify van Loon’s architectural approach to porcelain and his sustained interest in reduced, expressive volume. The silhouettes are elongated and softly tapering, rooted in modernist abstraction yet subtly animated by gentle curvature and asymmetric openings.
Executed in glossy porcelain, the surfaces transition between deep cobalt blue and crisp white. The glaze amplifies the sculptural clarity of the forms: light moves cleanly across planes and edges, accentuating height, tension, and spatial presence. About the Designer – Johan Gerard van Loon (1934–2020)
Johan van Loon was a pioneering Dutch ceramist and textile artist who played a central role in expanding ceramics from functional design into an expressive sculptural medium. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Konstfack in Stockholm—where he worked with Stig Lindberg—and later trained in London with Lucie Rie.
Van Loon collaborated with leading manufacturers such as Rosenthal and Royal Copenhagen, founded his own studio in Hengelo, and was instrumental in establishing the ceramics department at ArtEZ in Enschede. His work is represented in museum and institutional collections throughout Europe.
