A striking piece of Space Age design from the 1970s, this wall or table light by Jo Hammerborg for Fog & Mørup reflects the bold experimentation of its era while echoing the legacy of Bauhaus design. The model, known as Diskos, embodies the clean geometry and minimalism that marked both the Mid-Century Modern and Pop Art movements.
The conceptual inspiration for this piece can be traced back to the Bauhaus school (1919–1923), founded by architect Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany. Gropius’s revolutionary idea of a Gesamtkunstwerk – a "total work of art" combining all creative disciplines – laid the groundwork for modernist design across multiple fields, from architecture to industrial design. Bauhaus alumni included visionaries like Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and László Moholy-Nagy, whose work continues to influence contemporary aesthetics.
The Diskos design cleverly channels this Bauhaus legacy, though it is often mistakenly attributed to other designers or labels. For instance, Bent Karlby’s “Peacock” lamp for Lyfa – a smaller, 27 cm version – emerged decades later and is frequently misidentified as the origin of this style. However, the fundamental geometry and color-blocking of these forms were already well-established in Bauhaus principles.
This Diskos light is much larger and far rarer than the Lyfa miniature, with a backplate measuring 48 cm in diameter. Constructed from steel rings with solid steel rivets, it exudes quality and durability. The lamp retains its original “Made in Denmark” seal on the back.
