This rare reclining armchair, model H 70, was designed in the 1930s by Jindřich Halabala—one of the most influential figures of European interwar modernism. Manufactured by UP Závody in former Czechoslovakia, the chair exemplifies Halabala’s pioneering vision for mass-producible, ergonomic, and visually refined furniture.
The H 70 model is notable for its elegant bentwood frame and adjustable reclining backrest, a functional innovation that predates many mid-century reclining designs. The beechwood structure has been preserved in very good original condition, exhibiting a rich, warm patina that speaks to the piece’s age and authenticity.
The cushions have been newly upholstered in premium cream white bouclé fabric. The work was carried out using traditional upholstery techniques, including the reuse of the original internal spring system—offering both period-correct comfort and a sophisticated contemporary aesthetic.
A true collector’s item, this chair is ideal for both refined living interiors and curated design spaces.
