A highly sculptural ceramic vase designed by Jean-Claude de Crousaz for Arpot Swiss Keramik, executed in a richly tactile composition that merges biomorphic abstraction with the earthy material language of postwar studio ceramics. With its asymmetrical relief surface, warm mineral glaze, and refined proportions, this piece stands as an exceptional example of Swiss ceramic modernism.
Design & Form
The vase is constructed around a rounded organic body rising into a slender neck, divided into contrasting surface zones. One side remains smooth and softly curved, covered in a warm beige-to-rust glaze with delicate speckling, while the other unfolds into a dense field of raised nodules of varying scale.
This rhythmic relief recalls coral structures, seed formations, marine organisms, or geological textures — giving the object an almost living presence. The transition between smooth and tactile surfaces creates a compelling dialogue between restraint and exuberance, geometry and nature.
The satin glaze enhances the sculptural depth of the relief while preserving the earthy quality of the ceramic body beneath. The result is an object that feels simultaneously primitive and sophisticated, deeply material yet highly controlled.
About the Designer
Jean-Claude de Crousaz (1931–2012) was a Swiss ceramic artist and designer educated at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Geneva, where he studied both graphic arts and ceramics under Marcel Noverraz. His work occupies an important place within postwar Swiss ceramic design, combining sculptural experimentation with refined craftsmanship.
From 1980 to 1996, de Crousaz taught ceramic painting at the art schools of Geneva and Vevey, influencing a new generation of Swiss ceramic artists. His works are appreciated for their tactile richness, organic abstraction, and nuanced glazing techniques.
About Arpot Swiss Keramik
Arpot was among the notable Swiss ceramic workshops associated with the studio pottery movement that flourished in the mid-20th century. Unlike industrial ceramic production, these workshops emphasized artistic individuality, hand-finished surfaces, and sculptural form.
This vase reflects the broader European shift during the 1960s and 1970s toward ceramics as autonomous art objects rather than purely functional vessels.
