Jan Wolkers (1925–2007) was a versatile Dutch artist, known as a writer, sculptor, and visual artist. Corporeality, nature, and transience are central to his visual work. Wolkers worked intuitively and directly, with a strong emphasis on material, structure, and tangibility. His paintings, assemblages, and objects often display rough surfaces, cracks, transparency, and organic forms, in which life and decay are inextricably linked. Wolkers made frequent use of glass, wood, and paint in thick layers, through which he made visible the vulnerability and power of nature. His visual language is distinctly expressive and personal, evoking both beauty and confrontation. Just as in his literary work, he did not shy away from taboos in his visual art. His work is included in important museum collections and remains beloved by collectors for its intense expressive power and physical presence.
