A major Dutch master artist who unfortunately only lived to be 31.
His entire oeuvre, created between 1907 and 1918, comprises approximately 150 paintings, mostly small formats, some 100 drawings, and over 40 prints, primarily etchings and woodcuts.
Jan Mankes has gone down in art history as "the Netherlands' most tranquil painter." He died young of tuberculosis, a fact that has contributed to the myth surrounding his artistry.
