Jan Lucas van der Baan was born on February 3 in the city of Groningen. From 1924 to 1931 he attended the Municipal HBS in Groningen, the school where team member Jan Gerrit Jordens taught drawing. Jordens was a strong supporter of free expression in drawing education. Van der Baan regarded Jordens as his most important teacher who was of great significance for his later development as an artist and teacher. In September 1931, Van der Baan began his studies at the Minerva Academy, where he took lessons from Franciscus Hermanus Bach and Dirk de Vries Lam.
Van der Baan became a member of De Ploeg in 1941. The work submitted by him was not positively assessed by all current Ploeg members. Some thought the work was not innovative enough and therefore not in keeping with the tradition of De Ploeg.
After the Second World War, Van der Baan played an important administrative role in De Ploeg. For some time he was secretary and also chairman. He was one of the initiators of the Graphic Center, which was founded in 1964.
With his somewhat academic-looking atmospheric painted work from the period 1935-1955, Van der Baan clearly deviated from the exuberant expressionist style that was so characteristic of most Ploeg painters in those days. In the 1960s, the use of color became more expressive. Important subjects for his paintings and watercolors were the landscape, the city of Groningen and the water.The canvas is in good condition. The frame has some small spots.
