Jablonec Glassworks Malachite Green Pressed Glass Ashtray – Bohemian Geometric Art Glass, Czechoslovakia, 1950s–1960s
A striking Bohemian pressed glass ashtray attributed to the renowned Jablonec glassworks, executed in an intense malachite-green glass with dramatic optical depth and sharply faceted geometry.
This sculptural object exemplifies the sophisticated decorative glass production that emerged from postwar Czechoslovakia, where industrial glassmaking reached an extraordinary balance between functionality, ornament, and modernist experimentation. Though conceived as an ashtray, the piece functions equally convincingly today as a vide-poche, jewellery dish, desk object, or purely sculptural accent.
The form is particularly remarkable: a starburst-like radial composition with deeply cut angular facets surrounding a central sun-like medallion. The alternating polished and satin-like optical zones create shifting reflections and luminous gradients within the dense emerald glass, producing a visual effect reminiscent of carved malachite stone or illuminated Art Deco crystal.
The serrated perimeter and faceted cigarette rests reinforce the object’s strong geometric rhythm, while the saturated green colour gives the piece an almost jewel-like presence.
Design & Context
During the 1950s and 1960s, the glassmaking region around Jablonec nad Nisou became internationally celebrated for highly innovative pressed and moulded decorative glass. Czech designers and manufacturers developed an unmistakable visual language combining Cubist influences, late Art Deco geometry, and emerging modernist abstraction.
This ashtray belongs to that tradition: bold, decorative, architectural, and unapologetically sculptural.
