Luxus was founded in 1950 in Vittsjö, Sweden, by Uno Kristiansson (born in 1925).
With his younger brother Östen Kristiansson (1927-2003), he developed the company into one of the most refined Scandinavian lighting and furniture manufacturers of the mid-20th century.
The two brothers grew up in a cabinetmaking environment. Their father had founded Vittsjö Möbelfabrik in 1929, where they learned woodworking, construction techniques, and materials science from a very young age.
This technical training strongly influenced the precision and finish of later Luxus creations.
Although Luxus is primarily known for its lighting fixtures from the 1950s and 1960s, the company also produced furniture. The designs were inspired by the ideals of modern Scandinavian design: clean lines, authentic materials, and harmonious proportions.
In addition to table lamps, floor lamps, and wall sconces, various furniture pieces were featured in the catalogs, illustrating the full scope of the company's activities and stylistic language.
These catalogs offer valuable insight into how lighting and furniture were conceived as part of a cohesive interior design vision. In the 1950s and 1960s, many designs were created by the brothers Uno and Östen Kristiansson themselves.
They developed a body of work that reflects an architectural clarity combined with understated details, characteristic of Swedish modernism of the time. In the late 1960s, Östen Kristiansson took over the family furniture business and continued it under the name Östen Kristiansson AB. The company later reverted to its historical name, Vittsjö Möbelfabrik AB, which it still bears today. Östen passed away in 2003. Vittsjö, a small town in southern Sweden, has developed a remarkable manufacturing tradition despite its modest size. A considerable portion of local employment has historically been linked to furniture production and related industries, creating a context in which craftsmanship and industrial design naturally evolved together.
