Mila: Both born in 1924 and classmates since the age of ten, Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá earned their doctorates in architecture from the University of Barcelona. In 1953, they founded their own architectural firm, solidifying a close professional and personal relationship that has made their names inseparable. They excelled as architects, interior designers, and industrial designers. They also made remarkable contributions to the teaching and dissemination of architectural design, both in Barcelona and throughout Spain, and to the international debate on architecture and design. Rationality was their defining characteristic, always with the user's satisfaction in mind. "We work with the same priorities that we apply to our architectural projects: rationalization." “ Their work draws inspiration from the lessons on the Modern Movement taught by Josep Maria Jujol, Francesc Ràfols, and José Antonio Coderch, with whom they collaborated for several years as apprentices, and from the architecture of northern Italy. From its inception, the Correa-Milá style was distinguished by its unique approach to spatial design. Examples of their rational interpretation of luxury and conviviality include their houses in Cadaqués, with their built-in furniture; the interior design of iconic locations in the history of Barcelona's Modernist movement, still in operation and preserved, such as the Flash-Flash restaurant (1969) and Il Giardinetto (FAD Interior Design Award in 1974 and 2011); The chairs and tables of the Reno restaurant (1961), as well as the Bach lamp (1970) and the Barceloneta armchair (1953), the latter reissued in 2023 by Santa & Cole. Renowned for their large-scale projects, such as the Montjuïc Olympic Ring, Correa and Milá acknowledged the challenges they faced in furniture and lighting design, a process they described as "eternal." "Architecture has a fixed date, design does not." This led them to invite designer Miguel Milá, Alfonso's younger brother, to join them in this endeavor. Together, they created, for example, the Diana lamp (1993) for the office of Barcelona's mayor, Pasqual Maragall, which was produced and published in the Santa & Cole catalog. Correa and Milá remain the standard-bearers of an architecture and design that are both inviting and welcoming.
