A beautiful example of Danish mid-century design is this Capella armchair, designed by the renowned Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø for Niels Eilersen. Designed around 1959, the Capella is a design in which simplicity, functionality, and refined construction come together in a unique way.
This version is made of teak and immediately stands out due to its powerful yet elegant design. A distinctive feature of this model is the closed sides of the armrests. While many Danish armchairs feature an open frame, the closed panels give the Capella a more sculptural and sheltered character.
Incidentally, this model is also available with open sides, though the closed variant is somewhat less common.
Combined with the beautifully shaped armrests and the slightly reclining back, the result is an armchair with a very recognizable appearance.
The armchair is in beautiful original vintage condition. Both the black leather of the seat and back, as well as the original upholstery of the side panels, are still intact. The leather naturally displays the necessary patina befitting its age and use, which is particularly visible on the sides, but it has no large holes or tears. It is precisely these marks that give the armchair its authentic and characterful appearance and emphasize that this is an original vintage piece.
The teak frame has a solid and very sturdy construction and has been fully treated, giving the wood a well-groomed and warm look once again. The combination of the rich teak, the original black leather, and the closed side panels makes this a particularly beautiful and characterful example of Scandinavian design.
An armchair for the enthusiast who appreciates original vintage character.
