This elegant ceramic lidded vase is a beautifully hand-painted piece by H. Bequet, a celebrated mid-century ceramicist from Quaregnon, Belgium.
The design features a vivid, red-glazed body adorned with a central bird motif-delicately rendered in earthy tones with accents of turquoise and green, perched amidst soft foliage. Framed by a scalloped, golden outline, the bird stands out as a focal point against the rich, red background.
The reverse side of the vase showcases abstract red marbling, giving it a sophisticated, artistic touch. Gilded accents decorate the base, rim, and lid, with a gold-topped finial shaped in Bequet's signature looping swirl. Hubert Bequet was a Belgian ceramicist and industrialist known for his vibrant and decorative ceramics. He began working in the ceramics industry in the 1920s and founded his own faience factory in Quaregnon, Belgium, in 1934. His workshop became known for producing richly colored and gold-accented ceramics, often with intricate patterns and traditional European motifs.
By the 1960s, the factory had grown significantly, employing over 150 workers. Despite its popularity, the business changed hands in 1978 and eventually closed in the early 1980s. Bequet continued producing ceramics on a smaller scale until 1985.
Today, H. Bequet ceramics are popular with collectors due to their distinctive style and craftsmanship. Pieces such as vases, pitchers, and decorative items are especially prized.
