Hubert Béquet decorative dish or fruit bowl.
In 1934, he set up his own earthenware factory in Quaregnon. The Hubert Béquet earthenware factory grew rapidly, reaching the height of its success in 1963, when it employed over one hundred and fifty workers. Faced with various problems, the factory was bought out in 1978 by Jema of Maastricht, and closed its doors for good in December 1982.
Hubert Béquet continued to produce earthenware in a small workshop, the faïencerie du Borinage, until April 1985. It was one of the few Belgian ceramics factories to successfully combine creativity and mass production of earthenware. The carefully crafted pieces, often decorated with fine gold, initially bear the Belgium trademark on the back, together with a model number. Later productions are stamped "Made in Belgium H. Béquet Quaregnon".
This dish, on a glossy black background, features a hand-painted floral composition in the center. The sides are gilded with fine gold, as are the wave-shaped rims. The H. Béquet is stamped on the underside, along with the production number. This dish was made in the '60s; it shows some signs of wear from use, but still has beautiful, bright colors. Used as a centerpiece, fruit bowl or decoration, it can also be hung on a wall. This dish is a beautiful decorative element, hand-crafted by the earthenware maker, and is a unique item.
