Brutalism has little to do with the German word "Brutalität" (brutality). Brutalism is an architectural movement of modernism that spread across all continents in the 1960s and remained prevalent until the 1980s.
The proponents of this style believed that modern industrialized societies needed art that was as powerful as possible. They should experience a "spiritual liberation, be brought to seeing, and experience sensuality instead of commerce."
This is also reflected in the underlying French word "brut," which means not only "raw" but also "rough," "coarse," "harsh," or "honest."
This candlestick by Horst Dalbeck, crafted in the 1960s, is a fascinating example of brutalist design and masterful metalwork.
