Horst Brüning, born in Hamburg in 1934, was a German designer and architect.
Brüning studied architecture and industrial design at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts until 1954. Following his studies, the young designer completed an internship at Arne Jacobsen's studio in Copenhagen. After returning to Germany in 1963, Brüning opened his own studio in Stuttgart. Here, he created numerous groundbreaking designs for renowned manufacturers such as COR, Kill International, and Behr. For Behr, he designed the furniture for the German pavilion at the 1969 World's Fair in Montreal.
During this time, Brüning maintained a friendship with the Danish designers Jørgen Kastholm and Preben Fabricius. The collaboration and exchange of ideas provided lasting inspiration for both of them.
In addition to his work as a designer, Horst Brüning was a university lecturer at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences from 1969 to 2000.
Horst's work is characterized by clarity, balanced proportions, and functionality. His aesthetic significantly shaped German modernism in the post-war period.
