This chair is the Hill House 1 model, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1902 for Hill House in Helensburgh, Scotland, and is presented here in a licensed version by the Italian manufacturer Cassina.
Its striking feature is the extremely high, grid-like backrest with its strictly geometric structure, which serves as both a decorative and architectural element, clearly attributing the design to Mackintosh's Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau influences.
The frame is made of black-stained ash, which visually emphasizes the slender construction, while the horizontal spindles of the backrest and frame create a harmonious grid. The seat is upholstered in a shimmering green special velour, whose refined texture provides a soft contrast to the strict lines of the wooden frame.
The chair comes with an original, unopened replacement fabric, also purchased from Cassina, intended for reupholstering. The underside bears the manufacturer's mark with the Cassina logo, Mackintosh signature, and serial number, along with the original product card detailing the model name, year of design, material specifications, and references to important exhibitions and publications.
Condition: The chair is in good, used condition with minor signs of wear on the wooden frame, such as small chips along the edges and fine surface scratches. The current velour upholstery shows wear and some pressure marks and discoloration, but can easily be replaced thanks to the included original fabric. The construction is stable, the backrest is firm, and all manufacturer's markings are clearly legible.
