This chair is the Hill House 1 model, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1902 for the Hill House in Helensburgh, Scotland, and here in a licensed version by the Italian manufacturer Cassina.
The striking feature is the extremely high, grid-like backrest with a strictly geometric structure, which is both a decorative and architectural element and clearly assigns the design to Mackintosh's Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau influence.
The body is made of black-stained ash, which visually emphasizes the slender construction, while the horizontal rungs of the backrest and frames create a harmonious grid. The seat is upholstered and covered with a shimmering green special velour, whose elegant texture creates a soft contrast to the strict lines of the wooden frame.
The chair comes with an originally packaged replacement fabric, also purchased from Cassina, which is intended for a new cover. On the underside is the manufacturer's embossing with the Cassina logo, Mackintosh signature and serial number, as well as the original product card with model name, design year, material details and references to important exhibitions and publications.
Dimensions: L39 cm x W40.5 cm x H140.5 cm
Seat height: 41 cm
The chair is in good, used condition with slight signs of wear on the wooden frame, such as small edge chips and fine surface scratches. The current velour cover shows wear and tear and pressure marks or discoloration in places, but can easily be replaced thanks to the original fabric supplied. The construction is stable, the backrest is firm and all manufacturer's markings are clearly visible.
