Mixed media on pop art cardboard, dimensions: 26 x 19 cm, outer frame 40 x 30 cm. Signed Werf and countersigned on the reverse Herman Van Der Werf and dated 1998. Provenance: W Hertogenbosch Gallery, Netherlands. Tilburg Academy of Fine Arts (M.O. in Drawing, 1965). He undertook study trips to Switzerland, France, Italy, and Luxembourg. From 1968 until his death, he lived in Retie, Belgium. He practiced painting, watercolor, drawing, lithography, and wood and copper engraving. His subjects were landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. He was influenced by, among others, Nicolas de Staël, Giorgio Morandi, Permeke, and De Smet. He died on July 1, 2008, in Mol, Belgium. Since approximately 1985, Herman van der Werf explored the boundary between realism and abstraction. When he began a painting, he employed a highly realistic structure. He finds it essential to use vibrant colors, and drawing remains important. He is inspired by the serenity of Giorgio Morandi and the pictorial structure of Nicolas de Staël. He admires the expression and exuberance of Willem de Koonig.
