Rare lithograph, published by Art Value
Discover one of the last and most iconic works by French master Henri Matisse: The Sadness of the King (La Tristesse du Roi, 1952). This impressive gouache découpage - or cutout artwork - marks the height and final phase of Matisse's career, when health problems prevented him from painting traditionally.
During this period, he developed his revolutionary technique: "painting with scissors." Colored sheets of paper, painted with gouache, were carefully cut out and assembled into vivid, grand compositions. The King's Sadness is one of his largest and most complex works in this style - and is rightly considered one of his absolute masterpieces.
🖼️ About the work:
The sculpture shows a seated figure holding a lute - according to many, a self-portrait of Matisse as an old king. Around him are dancing figures and musical movement: a visual celebration of creativity surrounded by melancholy. It evokes associations with King David, classical stories, and the eternal tension between joy and sorrow.
