Hanna Modrzewska Nowosielska, decorative plate, 1960s, diameter: 26 cm.
Signed on the back: "H. Modrzewska UNIKAT"
Hanna Modrzewska Nowosielska studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. After graduating in 1950, she became an assistant to the renowned set designer Otto Axer. She worked at the Warsaw Opera and then at the Contemporary Theatre. In 1956, under the influence of her husband, Leszek Nowosielska, she became interested in ceramics, initially creating artistic porcelain platters and ceramic utilitarian objects. She participated in her husband's artistic work while simultaneously developing her own style, which was intimate ceramic sculpture. She created compositions consisting of human silhouettes, many of them inspired by theatre and ballet. Their characteristic features were elongated female figures and the use of Art Nouveau styling. In the 1990s, the artist created a series dedicated to the Holocaust, the figures reflecting the tragic history of the Jewish people. The technique used gives the viewer the impression that they were made of metal, not ceramic. After her husband's death, Hanna Modrzewska-Nowosielska ended her artistic career.
