An exceptional piece with a story: This four-poster bed was handcrafted in 1993 in a small local carpentry workshop on the island of Zanzibar. It was created according to traditional Zanzibari design principles, influenced by Swahili and Indo-Arabic styles. In Zanzibar, this type of bed is called "Samadari." Characteristic features include the elaborately designed, soaring headboard and footboard, which also serve as the frame for a mosquito net. The bed is not a smoothly polished or industrially perfect designer piece, but rather an authentic, rustic piece of locally handcrafted furniture. Small irregularities and traces of the handcrafted production are part of the bed's character and make each piece unique. Teak and mahogany were used for the bed's construction. It consists of: a headboard with embellishments and three hand-painted glass tiles, a footboard with embellishments and three hand-painted glass tiles, two side panels, the upper frame for the mosquito net, eight long, handcrafted wooden screws, and a matching handcrafted wrench for assembly. The handcrafted connectors are particularly beautiful: the long screws are screwed directly into the bedposts and are clearly visible in the detail photo. Dimensions: Sleeping area: 160 × 200 cm. The construction with the upper frame creates the typical, spacious four-poster bed silhouette. The frame can be covered with a mosquito net or light fabrics. The story behind it: The bed includes not only the current photos but also two original photographs from 1993: one shows the small workshop where the bed was made. The second photo shows the workshop owner and carpenter at the time presenting the invoice for the bed. The origin of this piece of furniture is thus unusually well documented – the bed is not simply a piece of furniture in the "African style," but was actually handcrafted on-site in Zanzibar by a local artisan.
