This teapot evokes something of the brilliance of Jaipur's markets, when the morning light strikes the blue and yellow ceramics from the old city's workshops. Its lenticular body, shaped like a pilgrim's gourd, is a rare form, directly inherited from the Mughal tradition, which Indian artisans perpetuate with undiminished mastery. On the immaculate white porcelain, an oval medallion, encircled by a wide sun-yellow fillet, features a brush-painted floral decoration with remarkable freedom and precision: large blue flowers with yellow centers, and cobalt blue foliage with flexible, slender stems. The neck is encircled by a vivid yellow band, and the foot by a frieze of blue scrollwork on a white background. The handle and spout are enameled in solid, glossy cobalt blue. The lid, topped with a floral knob, features the same decoration. Height 28 cm, width 24 cm. Luminous and intact glaze. On a shelf or sideboard, this teapot asserts its presence with the vitality and warmth of Indian decorative arts. The cobalt blue and sun-yellow capture the light with a particular intensity.
