Hand-painted miniature portrait of the Duchesse de Coutances by Labille-Guiard 19th century
Decorate your walls with a 19th century portrait of the Duchess of Coutances by Adélaïde Labille-Guiard! Duchess of the Breton aristocracy, she was immortalized by the famous portraitist of the Ancien Régime, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, recognized for her talent and her portraits full of symbolism and feminine emotions, in an artistic world still anchored in the strict etiquette of art salons, where artistic freedoms were still limited.
Born into a bourgeois family in Paris on April 11, 1749, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard was the youngest daughter of a Paris haberdasher. She trained with miniaturist François-Élie Vincent from her early teens (around 1763), then learned pastel painting with Maurice-Quentin de La Tour (until 1774), before turning to oil painting under François-André. Admitted to the Académie de Saint-Luc in 1767, she exhibited there from 1774.
In 1783, she became one of the first women admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, alongside Élisabeth Vigée-Le Brun, a victory for the advancement of feminist rights in the 18th century!
This portrait is a tribute to this renowned portraitist, often in the shadow of the better-known Vigée Lebrun. Just as talented, she was instrumental in bringing human feelings to the fore in portraits, rather than the strict, framed style of the paintings of the ancien régime.
Don't wait any longer, and treat yourself to a portrait of the Duchesse de Coutances by Adélaïde Labille-Guiard that will appeal to young and old alike, as well as to connoisseurs and collectors of 19th-century miniature portraits!
