A small object that alone tells the story of an entire era, when Vallauris became one of the great centers of French ceramics and workshops freely reinvented familiar household objects. This chamberstick takes on the ancient form of the candlestick that was once carried from one room to another, but tradition is here completely upended by the aesthetic of the 1960s. The long, generously sculpted handle, the circular drip pan, and the central cup designed to hold the candle compose a silhouette that is both rustic and resolutely modern. The decoration is particularly warm. A deep, glossy brown serves as a backdrop for ruby red hues, while foamy white, turquoise, and sea-green enamels spread freely across the drip pan and onto the handle. The firing effects give each part a different texture and nuances, characteristic of this exploration of enamels that largely defined the personality of post-war Vallauris ceramics. The piece bears the handwritten inscription Vallauris on its base. It shows two slight impacts on the edges, traces of its history that do not detract from its beautiful decorative effect. An authentic small piece from Vallauris, full of character and representative of the creative effervescence of the workshops on the French Riviera during the 1960s. Drip pan diameter approximately 10 cm. Height approximately 6 cm. Vallauris, 1960s.
