Gustave Franciscus De Smet "Fishing Boats on the River" oil on canvas 30 x 40 cm, framed 44 x 54 cm. Gustave de Smet was born in Belgium. At the beginning of the First World War, on August 1, 1914, Gustave de Smet and his family, accompanied by his friend Frits van den Berghe, left for Amsterdam. He left a large number of paintings behind with his brother in Ghent. At that time, he painted in a luminist style within a post-impressionist form. The influence of the Amsterdam artists was enormous. The Hague School period was coming to an end, and the new modern influence of the French Fauvists slowly found its way to Amsterdam, exemplified by the painters Leo Gestel, Jan Sluijters, and Le Fauconnier. Gestel, in particular, introduced De Smet to the artistic circles of Amsterdam. In 1914, Le Fauconnier settled in the Netherlands and worked in Bergen, where he founded the Bergen School together with Van Gestel. De Smet was strongly influenced by the brown and dark colors of the Bergen School. By then, an enclave of Belgian refugees had formed in Blaricum. Most could not and did not want to return to their homeland due to their Flemish activism and their disapproval of Belgian art policy. From August 1916, he settled in Blaricum with his wife, Gusta. Around 1918, he worked regularly in the fishing villages of Huizen and Spakenburg on the Zuiderzee. He met Jozef Cantré, who taught him woodcarving. His first solo exhibition in Belgium in 1920 at the "Le Petit Centaure" gallery consisted mainly of subjects with a Dutch feel. Recently, one of his works, 'De Brink in Laren', was purchased by the Singer Museum. In 1923, he returned to Belgium permanently. He died in 1943 in Deurne, Belgium. Gustave Franciscus De Smet was a Flemish painter. Together with Constant Permeke and Frits Van den Berghe, he belongs to the big three of Flemish Expressionism. He often signed his works with Gust.
