Product description
Exceptional collector's document. This auction catalog from the Gustave Cahen Collection, Third Sale, is entirely dedicated to the watercolors, drawings, and sketches of Henry Monnier ( ). Henry Monnier is one of the most unique figures of the French 19th century. A draughtsman, watercolorist, actor, and writer, he is the creator of the famous character Joseph Prudhomme, an archetype of the self-satisfied and sententious bourgeois who brought him fame as early as the 1830s. His watercolors and sketches capture Parisian daily life, social types, and genre scenes of his era with a keen and often ironic eye. Gustave Cahen was an enlightened Parisian collector from the second half of the 19th century, specializing in French drawings and graphic works. His collection was dispersed in several successive sales. This catalog corresponds to the third sale. The catalog features detailed descriptive notes for each lot. Self-portrait in pencil, studies made in Belgium (Namur 1837, Antwerp 1832), signed and dated watercolors, portrait of the actor Romanville in Brussels in 1853. Each work is described with its technique, dimensions, signature, and location. The volume is illustrated with black and white photogravure reproductions of the works offered for sale. Softcover binding, cream paper cover, title printed in brown. Large format. Condition. Cover yellowed and worn on the edges and corners, spine weakened. Interior well-preserved, solid paper, clear reproductions, without annotations. A primary source for researchers, art historians, and collectors specializing in 19th-century French art. Additional details: - Brand: Henry Monnier - Colour: brun - Period: 19th century
