A magnificent, historic, and extremely rare masterpiece by the renowned Belgian ceramist Roger Guérin (1896-1954) from Bouffioulx. It concerns an imposing Art Deco vase with a rotating decoration from the heyday of his studio, made around 1925-1930.
This monumental vase with three handles (Trois Anses) displays a beautifully elaborated medieval theme in relief:
Side 1: A detailed medieval knight in full armor with sword, spear, and shield.
Side 2: A fortified fortress/castle with watchtowers and battlements.
Side 3: A heraldic coat of arms with two knightly lions and horizontal stripes. The Vase is fully catalogued on the underside and manually marked in the wet clay: Hand-drawn signature "Guerin" in the early, flamboyant handwriting.
Model number V60 (Vase Model 60, The Iconic Baluster/Hourglass Silhouette).
Size and serial number K5, indicating a substantial, early series version with manually mounted handles.
The body of the Vase and the glaze layer are in very neat, authentic condition. As is often the case with this early, heavy studio work, the handles have not withstood the ravages of time entirely unscathed:
One handle shows a hairline crack/tension line at the base (See detail photo).
One handle has an old fracture line/chip with enamel loss at the base (See detail photo). Despite these two signs of age near the ears, this remains an extremely rare museum piece that seldom appears on the market with this specific knight decoration. A beautiful collector's item for lovers of Belgian studio ceramics and Art Deco.
