Description:
A true showpiece! This substantial Japanese Satsuma vase, standing an impressive 40 cm tall, dates from the 1950s and is a beautiful example of the craftsmanship for which Satsuma pottery is world-renowned.
The moon vase has a warm, cream-yellow background with fine craquelure and the characteristic dotting that makes this type of pottery so recognizable. Two impressive gilded 3D salamanders coil as handles along the neck — a real eye-catching detail that you rarely see so substantial and detailed.
A rich, fully hand-painted decor is applied to the belly: a colorful bird (peacock/pheasant) amidst peonies, cherry blossoms, and stylized foliage. The decoration is executed in polychrome enamel colors with blue-white cloisonné-like panels, red-white dotted borders, and gold accents. The neck features an elegant spiral and floral motif.
