Product description
Provençal Pottery - Glazed terracotta jug known as a "conscience" jug, dating from the 19th century. A rare model with six handles that were used to thread ropes through, securing the jug firmly, especially when transported by donkey. Historically rooted in Provence, this folk art pottery was originally used by mendicant monks to proselytize or collect olive oil from the locals for the poor. Each monk gave "according to his conscience," which is how the jug got its name. In excellent condition considering its age. Height: 30 cm. Weight: 4.3 kg. Carefully packaged for shipping.
